Potpourri Stitchers: Victorian Ticking Work

Piecework magazine, Fall 2021 featured two articles on Victorian ticking work. In the mid 1800s ticking work was used for many household items, small to large. White stripes of ticking fabric were covered with multiple-layer embroidery stitches in many colors of purse silks and the colored stripes were covered with cords, braids, and ribbons.

The original ticking stripes hardly show. Purse silks today would be similar to #8 pearl cotton and look for 1/16-1/8” braids, cords, and ribbons for your project. The magazine includes several ideas for useful bags or pouches made from ticking stripes.
