Potpourri Stitchers: Felted Flower Part 1 of 3

Lee Popp will lead us in making one of the felted flowers from Embroidered Flora & Fauna  by Lesley Turpin-Delport and Nikki Delport-Wepener. The pattern and instructions are on pages 23, 34, 38-39, 60-62, 144-145.

This flower is made by cutting out multiple pieces of felt and layering them with ribbon and thread embellishment. When finished, it can be made into a brooch or put on a stem in a vase.

Some of the stitches used are Buttonhole (optional), Needle Weaving, Running/gathering stitch, Couching, Drizzle (optional), and Colonial or French Knots.

In this meeting, we will bond the two fabric layers for 3 flower petals, draw the pattern pieces onto freezer paper, iron the freezer paper pattern onto fabric(s), and cut out the fabric pieces.

It's a long list of supplies but the amounts needed are small for most of it so we will be sharing materials and expertise.  Bring what you can.

Supply list

  • Felt (not synthetic) thick - in color of flower - 5”square
  • Felt thin - in color of flower - 5” square
  • Felt thin - green - two 5” squares
  • Dyed cotton -in flower color - 4” square
  • Silk Dupioni, Organdy or Chiffon - in color of flower (need 3 - 5” squares your choice of fabric combinations)
  • Needles used are tapestry #22;  chenille #18-22;  straw # 4/5;   embroidery #7/8
  • Variegated Silk ribbon in flower color - 4mm and 7mm wide
  • Stranded Cotton - yellow and green and variegated in color of flower
  • Perle cotton - variegated in color of flower and green in size #12 or #8 or #5
  • Yarn (optional)for flower center:  Yellow and color of flower. Chenille - yellow (for flower center) and Boucle - variegated - darker than flower color or a dark yellow
  • Embroidery hoop - 4/6 inches
  • Sharp point scissors
  • Fray Check glue
  • Wire -  gauge 28/18
  • Green florists tape (for stem) or pinback if making into a brooch
  • Paper for appliqué - freezer paper or parchment paper
  • Wonder Under / Bond-a-Web - fusible web adhesive (heat set)
  • Wadding/ batting - small amount

This group meets monthly the 3rd Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to approx. 2:00 p.m.
